Thank you. I spent my service today alone in a quiet sanctuary. I was able to walk/perform The Way of the Cross using Saint Archbishop Oscar Romero as a guide and spent my time honoring each station. It satisfied my needs and I believe in the Saint's views in our current world. Now to action.
I'm here for EMO CHURCH! 😂 But seriously, have you ever been to a tenebrae? It's my fav. Western Christianity desperately need more room for grief and less toxic positivity.
Emo church best church!! I love a tenebrae service. The church I grew up in does that, it's gorgeous. Totally agree - get that toxic positivity out of there.

First pres never did have a good friday service (whaaa?), so i got permission to let our youth group do one. Their mistake.
We spent the next ten good fridays (til i retired) thinking of and trying out new and different ways to freak out the congregation, to try to illustrate how, like the folks at the place of the skull (who did not know that a flowery "he has risen" easter morning thing was coming) were freaked out.
I was so very proud and amazed at the kids ideas and them working so very hard to make it as it should be, dark and gloomy and powerful and a little crazy.
It was always a wide open, exhilarating roller coaster ride, start to finish.
My absolute favorite youth group thing ever, hands down.
That's so cool. Younger folks are often so much more willing/able to think outside churchy boxes...and just to read the scripture texts and roll with the darkness/gloominess/power/exhilaration we find there. Thanks for sharing your story!
Beautiful. Yes, bring on the somber! I've always loved that Good Friday and Holy Saturday give us lots of space for a sober encounter with grief, loss, and pain.
What do some people think. Where is the sense of propriety? You’d do better to stay home and listen to JS Bach’ “Saint Matthew’s Passion.” The final chorus can open the mind to reflect on the anti-civilizational wreckage rising everywhere.
Consider the stature of TF Torrence or Jean Vanier or Jürgen Moltmann. Are aspiring theologians or clergy not required to pursue their work?
An absence of any sense of propriety ought not to be a credit to those professions.

That sounds so good. And a lovely reminder that remembrance can be personal and private even as it's also often communal.
